Biography

Paolo Terrosi

< I was born in Pisa in 1955. Art, in all its expressions, is everywhere around me, it has always accompanied me and I have always, in various forms, cultivated it. In a special way, the artistic beauty that nature can put forth has constantly exerted a magnetic attraction in me, leading me on every occasion to immerse myself in it, to absorb its energy and try to grasp its beauty, majesty and nuances as best I can, starting from the smallest details.

Mine has always been a continuous search that would allow me to give form and creative expressiveness, in a way that I felt was truly mine, to this vision. A form that would give me a way to transfer in the most immediate way emotions. A search, an experimentation that landed, in the mid-2000s to an art form that best satisfied my desire to communicate, "Wire Tree Art" or "Wire Tree Sculpture."

The strong bond, attraction and admiration that I have for these majestic creatures that are trees, of which we should all have great respect, I try to convey in each of my sculptures, in a creative process, which from simple metal wires is transformed into works dedicated to them. Wires of aluminum, which from a few units become dozens, hundreds, until they form entire plant organisms that starting from the roots, clinging to the earth that supports them, go towards the sky, as in a metaphor that symbolically reminds us of the continuous cycle of life. Trees, life forms to which we owe so much, primarily our existence on this Planet.

I draw inspiration from every form of expression they convey to me in any situation, real, and sometimes pure fantasy, trying to reproduce it as best I can even in detail. Mine is an always open dialogue with the world, made of a direct, crystalline communication, with which I try to convey a very intense and direct message aimed at raising awareness and stimulating attention to a theme, among other things very current, related to the environment. Even in the use of the wooden bases on which my sculptures almost always rest, I use exclusively sections or roots that come from salvaged materials.

In a way, wood being a living essence, I thus try to give it new life. Thanks to the positive feedback that my works have received, in recent years I have developed, between solo and group exhibitions, an intense exhibition activity in Italy and abroad, which has led me to exhibit not only in various galleries, but also in very evocative places, such as some beautiful musealized churches, in the presence of very important paintings from the Renaissance period.

Among some of the recognitions I have received for my form of communication and artistic interpretation, in September 2019 in Monte Carlo in the Principality of Monaco, one of my works was awarded the Oscar of Creativity for contemporary artists and in 2020 the New York City International Award, with a work exhibited in Manhattan, for enhancing Italian art and creativity in the world.

My artistic journey does not go hand in hand with my exhibition activity. My approach to this type of sculpture, “Wire Tree Art” or “Wire Tree Sculpture,” dates back to about 12 years ago, while my exhibition activity began about 8 years later. The reasons for this lie in a number of factors that led me to believe, perhaps mistakenly, that my creations were reserved, or rather dedicated, to those who had the opportunity to enjoy them, if they so wished, only in a very direct way, without media intermediation.

Over time, however, I realized that I did not think it was right to limit the dissemination and, above all, the knowledge of my works, not so much for the quality or beauty of the works themselves, which was not for me to judge, but for the intrinsic message they carry with them and which I have always wanted to express, even more so and with greater force in recent years.

From there, it was a short step to realizing that perhaps the best way was to try to make them known through social media and exhibitions. So, over the last four years, I have developed a rather intense exhibition and communication activity, which has led me to exhibit in group and solo shows around Italy and abroad.

I must honestly say that my greatest satisfaction has come from discovering, through these channels, that there is a world that is very sensitive to environmental issues, which I try to express through my works, and that I have found a very high percentage of appreciation for them. This appreciation is directed at the works themselves, but also at the social content that they seek to represent in various forms.

Here are some of the exhibitions I have participated in over the last few years:

In July 2018, “Fantastic'arte,” a group exhibition in the beautiful medieval village of Mensano (SI) in the heart of Tuscany, a few kilometers from San Gimignano.

In February 2019, for 20 days, with six of my works on display, a beautiful and significant “group exhibition” of four artists at the M.A.D gallery in Mantua dedicated to Japan, entitled “All'ombra dei ciliegi in fiore” (In the shade of cherry blossoms). Two Japanese artists, Shuhei Matsuyama and Toshio Okuda, and the Italian-South African artist Sabrina Golin.

In September 2019, for one month, a collective exhibition in Alzano Lombardo at the Art Events space of the Mazzoleni Foundation in Alzano Lombardo (BG) entitled “Sfumature D'Arte” (Shades of Art). Three of my works were on display.

In October 2019, a solo exhibition featuring eight works was held in the charming medieval village of Castelmuzio (Siena) in the heart of Val D'Orcia. The exhibition was unique in that it took place in the beautiful setting of the Church of the Holy Trinity and St. Bernardino.

The museum-like church houses important paintings and altarpieces, such as the Madonna and Child by the school of Duccio di Buoninsegna, San Bernardino da Siena by Giovanni Di Paolo, Madonna with Child and Saints by Matteo Di Giovanni, 19th-century wooden stalls, and other works. Being accustomed to exhibiting in classic art galleries, finding myself exhibiting in such a setting, in the presence of Renaissance works, was an almost mystical experience.

From December 7, 2019, to January 6, 2020, an equally exciting experience in a collective exhibition in the splendid Gubbio (PG), entitled “Natale in Arte” (Christmas in Art).

This highly evocative event took place inside the beautiful museum church of Santa Maria Nuova, which houses, among other important frescoes, Ottaviano Nelli's masterpiece “Madonna Del Belvedere.” The uniqueness of the event also lay in the fact that the opening of the beautiful church coincides with events of this kind. The exhibition in the Umbrian city attracted a large number of visitors. Four works were on display.

In June 2020, as a selected artist, he participated in the “Premio Internazionale Città Di New York” exhibition at the White Space Chelsea 55 West Street gallery.

In September 2020, on the occasion of the presentation of the Mondadori artists' catalog, a collective exhibition in the splendid setting of Palazzo Ximenes in Florence.

The curatorial committee of the Florence Biennale 2021, for participation in the October 2021 edition.

In April 2022, “Mostra Arte Genova” (Genoa Art Exhibition).

In November 2022, one of my works will be on display at “Dubai Downtown Design.”
